How to Improve the Candidate Experience

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. In April of 2017, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the unemployment rate dropped to 4.4%, a 10-year low. This news should equal happy job candidates, right? Not so fast.

According to the 2016 North American Candidate Experience Research Report, companies still have a long way to go in terms of improving the candidate experience, a process defined as “how job seekers perceive and react to employers’ sourcing, recruiting, interviewing, hiring, and onboarding processes.”

The study cited issues such as lack of recruiter follow-up with candidates, inefficient application tracking technology, and a shortage of warmth and brand personalization by employers. Why should hiring companies care? It simple: the report summarized that “41% of global candidates who believe they had a ‘negative’ overall one-star job seeker experience say they will take their alliance, product purchases, and relationship somewhere else.”
